Celebrating Saint James Cathedral’s feature in AIA Seattle’s 2025 Honor Awards!
"Saint James Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in the First Hill neighborhood of Seattle and primary church of the Archdiocese of Seattle. Constructed in 1907, the Cathedral has evolved over the years with major renovations in 1917, 1950 and 1994.
First Hill has also undergone significant evolution, with high rise buildings now overshadowing the Cathedral. With this increased density has been a reduction in available parking for visitors and parishioners. The closest lots are located to the northeast at O’Dea High School and Cabrini Tower Garage, which has shifted the primary entrance of the Cathedral from the Ceremonial Doors along Ninth Ave. to a secondary accessible entrance at Marion St. and Terry Ave.
The Portico project transforms this secondary entrance into a primary entrance through the following design interventions which aid in wayfinding, accessibility and conveying Catholic theology."
